Brand New – Me Vs. Maradona Vs. Elvis

Posted by admin 25 comments

From their album Deja Entendu. Lyrics: After one or two I get used to the room We’ll slow when we first make our moves by five or six years, you leave the car number nine with my head on the bar and it’s sad, but true cash and IOUs I’m desperate desires and plans unadmirable My tongue the taste of gin and malicious intent bring you back to the bar to get out of the cold My sober straight face gets you out of your clothes and they are afraid that we all know the crimes they commit Who they’ll kiss before going home I’m going to bed awake for fun and fake like I want you Let you fall for every empty word I say barely conscious the door where you keep your eyes struggle against sleep while your mouth makes your demands You laugh at every word trying to be cute I almost feel sorry for what I’ll do And your hair smells of smoke Who cast the first stone? You can sin or spend the night all alone brass buttons on your coat to keep the cold in the shape of a heart that they cut into the stone you are using all your looks that you’ve thrown from the start If you let I like me I swear I’ll tear Because that’s all you can be you’re a drunk and everyone is afraid it is ladies night, all the girls drink for free I will lie awake for false pleasure and as I hold you Let you fall for every empty word I say I’ll stay awake and lie for fun and fake like I want you Let you fall for every empty word I say I’ll stay awake and lie for fun and fake . . .

I personally believe this song is about the intention of rape. I had a class not that long ago where we broke down this song, and if you really look into it most of the lyrics imply rape. Well, I more than believe it. I think 100% it’s about rape.

So u take after Rob W, to state vs Maradona and Elvis, u beat Marra cuz I dont watch footy, to compare with Elvis you will loose 100%, I dont mark u because of this simple mistake, if this is here 3wks from now I will, and you will be a loser.

He takes advantage of a drunk girl, but feels like she is taking advantage of him too, purely because he still feels vunerable. sic transit gloria may have to do with this song also, maybe he feels like all girls use him, so it’s okay for him to use just one drunk girl. “I almost feel sorry for what I’m gunna do” get it? He ALMOST feels sorry, meaning he feels somewhat justified. His justification being that he’s been used also.

This song is fucking epic. And even that doesn’t cover it.

yeah its about taking complete advantage of a drunk girl… but i agree to the open view thing. a person having their own opinion is definately a good thing and different people have different ways of relating words to their lives… some songs are pretty straight forward but a good band like brand new you can have lots of views on lyrics.

I agree with you 100% on the ‘open to interpretation’… I believe it is about rape. Me and my brother have been thinking and we both conclude that it is indeed about rape. Or in the very least, about taking advantage of someone.

Great comment by the way… Very intelligent and true. :)

Another theory that my mum got me thinking about is that its about a rape. Immediately I was like, “uhh NO” but if you listen to it and follow the lyrics it kind of makes sense. I have my own meaning to it…that’s what I love about this band…all of their songs, you can relate to it in your own way…and give it your own meaning. Open to interpretation. True art.

Okay. I guess maybe looking for deeper meaning in a song about fucking drunk girls seems a bit pretentious to me. I’ll agree that Brand New is ingenious, but I think that sometimes a spade is a spade. He may as well have called the song Me vs. Richard Pryor vs. Chris farley. It would still be the same song.

A guide that gives the listener perspective? What does that even mean dude? I mean, whatever, I guess it means whatever you want it to mean. And I said of course it is about fucking drunk girls literally, but I also think it means something more. It’s a sad sounding song, and every other song on this album has a deep meaning, so it just makes sense.

I disagree with you. The symbolism in the name is a guide that gives the listener perspective. But the song is straight forward. He really is talking about fucking drunk girls.

On some level I think he’s also trying to justify his actions because of what his ex-girlfriend did to him. Think about this song in relation to Sic Transit Gloria, which is much more literal. In general this song is not just about using people, but about being used. Everyone is destructive.

Actually the lyrics are at least somewhat encrypted. It is about what you said….literally, but it also has a metaphorical meaning completely different. Think about the title of the song. Brand New song titles sometimes sound random, but they’re not at all. If the song is just about fucking drunk girls why does it sound so sad? I think it’s because he’s speaking from two points of view at once. Literally he’s the guy, metaphorically he’s the girl (please no funny comments on that).

its sad that half of you are only here because of a talentless woman who’s daddy paid her way your stardom. its great to see bands work there way up to fame and popularity through hard work and elbow grease. guys like these deserve to be loved. the deserve to have their songs listened to. they have taken time to learn instruments and write true songs. they are real musicians. its sad to see music fought over so much. its meant to mean things, to inspire. why cant everyone get along??

This song is disgusting but it’s so true. Make girls pay for your shit and listen to them talk themselves into bed with you. I just had to post it on my myspace status update, and i can’t wait for ppl’s nasty responses so i could air them out

i agree fuck demi lavato, you can’t really hate on the person who listens to them cause music is subjective, although it isn’t too hard to determine whether or not the music or the artist(s)
    have any potential .

@kennygr8 This song is about persauding drunk sluts to f*ck you (and in the case of jesse lacey, its about being a god). But I hope that you’re kidding. It’s not like the lyrics are encrypted…

@christinahainestv Hey, hey, be fair. The chances are they wouldn’t have heard of Brand New otherwise. I heard this song because I found it on a Fan Soundtrack for a video game I like, if I hadn’t heard it there I never would have heard it. If she helped them find it then hey, there’s another fan of the song. Good recomendations are always good. They can comment what they like as long as it’s not rude.

AGREE. like really, can’t they find good music on their own? and if they do look up the video, do they have to leave some stupid comment about how that bitch ‘took them to this video’?
